StepTop – Privacy Policy

1. Introduction

Richard developed the StepTop app. This policy explains what data the app accesses, how it is used, and how it is stored when you use StepTop.

2. Data Collected and Stored

StepTop stores the following data locally on your device only:

• Step data from Health Connect: Daily step counts read from Google Health Connect (read-only, last 30 days or more once approved).
• Step history (local archive): To prevent data loss after the 30-day Health Connect window, the app automatically saves your daily step counts in local storage on your device. This data never leaves your device.
• Google Takeout import: If you choose to import a Google Takeout ZIP file, the app reads the file locally on your device to extract historical step data. The file and its contents are never uploaded or transmitted anywhere.
• Settings: Your personal preferences such as daily step goal, language, week start day, and notification time.
• Notes: Optional personal notes per day, week, month, or year.
• Badges and streak savers: Earned badges and streak saver progress stored locally.

3. Data Usage

All data collected by StepTop is used exclusively to display your step statistics, calculate rankings and streaks, and personalise the app experience. No data is sent to external servers or shared with third parties, except as described under Advertisements below.

4. Health Connect

StepTop requests read-only access to step data via Google Health Connect. The app never writes data to Health Connect. Step data is not stored outside your device and is not shared with anyone.

5. File Access (Google Takeout Import)

StepTop can optionally access files on your device solely to allow you to select and import a Google Takeout ZIP file containing your historical step data. This feature is entirely optional and initiated by you. The file is processed locally on your device; no data from the file is uploaded or transmitted to any server.

6. Advertisements

StepTop uses Google AdMob to display banner and rewarded ads. AdMob may collect device identifiers (such as the advertising ID) and usage data for ad personalisation and analytics. For details, please refer to Google's Privacy Policy.

7. No Account Required

StepTop does not require an account, registration, or login. No name, email address, or other personal identification data is collected by the app.

8. Data Deletion

Uninstalling the app permanently removes all locally stored data, including step history, settings, notes, badges, and streak savers. No data is retained on any server after uninstallation.

9. Notifications

StepTop can send optional daily step reminders. Notifications are generated locally on your device. No data is transmitted when a notification is sent. You can enable or disable notifications at any time in the app settings.

10. Permissions Used

• READ_STEPS (Health Connect): To read your daily step count.
• POST_NOTIFICATIONS: To send optional daily step reminders.
• SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM: To deliver reminders at the exact time you choose.
• INTERNET / ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE: Required for loading advertisements via AdMob.
• READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE / READ_MEDIA: To allow you to select a Google Takeout ZIP file from your device storage for local import.

11. Policy Updates

This policy may be updated from time to time. Changes take effect as soon as the updated policy is published on this page. We encourage you to review it periodically.
